Carry Permits Available

Updated: January 2010

Suggested Permits in order of preference/priority. Total possible from our courses for MN residents is at least 35-state carry authority.

Utah: $65.25, apply by mail on the day of class. Five-year renewal is only $10 plus a new photo (no renewal class). This is the most widely-honored and economical permit. MN honors the Utah permit, including MN residents. The Utah Permit includes most of the same states as the MN permit plus many more. Our Utah Supplement Course fee plus the Utah Application fee is only slightly more than the Minnesota Permit fee (slightly less if using our discount programs). You can apply by mail the day of class and there is no record tied to your driver’s license. This is your best value. Utah permits are currently honored in the following states (note that some states do not honor unless you are a Utah resident) CLICK HERE. (Use your BACK button to return here.)

Minnesota: Sheriffs are allowed to charge up to $100 for new permits, up to $75 for renewals. These are the usual fees, a very few charge less. You must apply in person during business hours in your county of residence (any MN Sheriff if not a MN resident). In combination with the Utah non-resident permit, the resident MN permit adds Kansas and Michigan and is also a permit to purchase a handgun or ‘military-style assault weapon’. It could also eliminate questions/confusion if stopped by a police officer. If you are not a MN resident, there is almost no advantage in obtaining a MN permit if you have a UT permit.

We provide MN and UT application info/materials in class. You are responsible to obtain materials to apply to the other states if you wish those permits. Other permits are optional and available without taking our Utah Supplement Course. The Florida permit can offer authority similar to Utah. It is, however, expensive, requires refresher training, requires that a law enforcement officer take your fingerprints and Minnesota does not honor any of these other permits at this time. We suggest that you not bother unless you travel to these states. Linked state names will take you to their permit info web site. Use your BACK button to return here.

Connecticut, Florida, Maine & New Hampshire permits are also available. In combination with the above, each adds these states only, bringing the total possible carry authority to thirty-five states or more. (Use your BACK button to return here.)

As other states recognize our courses and add reciprocities, your authority will extend without need of further training. We work diligently to give you the best possible value for attending our courses.

Our Multi-State Permit to Carry a Firearm Courses also meet or exceed the published statutory training requirements for the following states: Alaska, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Mississippi, Montana, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia & Wyoming.

Our Multi-State Permit to Carry a Firearm Course may meet the published statutory training requirements for the following states. However, acceptance of training is subject to the discretion of individual issuing authorities: Alabama, California, Colorado, & Idaho.

Pending States:

Delaware, Wisconsin and Illinois are attempting to pass shall-issue legislation. We are unaware whether our courses will qualify applicants or what reciprocities might be available. Check back.

If you have any questions regarding any states not listed here, please contact us.

LEOs currently employed and licensed to carry a firearm by their agency (incl. US Military LEOs with some limitations) are authorized by the LEOSA to carry a firearm on or off-duty in all fifty states with current LEO identification.

Retired LEOs: Retired Law Enforcement Officers who meet the LEOSA requirements may carry firearms in all 50 states. This includes U.S. Military LEOs (MPs, USCG, etc.) If you are a retired LEO now residing in Minnesota and your department will not certify you, we can certify you for fifty-state carry, including states that prohibit citizens.

Disclaimer: Each state has differing requirements regarding residency, training, disqualifying personal history, possession of permits from other states, minimum age and other criteria. We attempt to keep our curriculum and this listing up-to-date, but the requirements of each state and the discretionary authority of various issuing agencies may change without prior notice. Some issuing authorities have discretion regarding qualifying criteria and these are not always consistent within a state. We have also noticed that some issuing authorities either fail to recognize or choose to disregard the published statutes in their own state. While we do not suggest that incompetence, political agendas and/or abuse of authority might be at work, the possibility cannot be ignored. As was demonstrated in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina, some authorities believe that U.S. citizens are under their control and the U.S. Constitution is simply an inconvenience they must dodge from time to time. If you are one of our graduates and you have been denied for lack of acceptable training, please contact us and we will attempt to assist you. We cannot make any guarantees regarding processes over which we have no control.

It is the student's responsibility to determine if our courses will be adequate for their purposes. This information is believed to be reliable at the time of publication, but we specifically disclaim any liability for errors, changes or circumstances beyond our control.
